Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
